Rural and community physicians today are challenged by the need to have a level of expertise in all cancer site treatments because they are expected to function as the “general practitioner” of oncology in their communities. In stark contrast, oncologists in major cancer centers are likely to focus their entire career on one disease site. Essential to the practice of medicine is the linking of these distinct entities. Chartrounds addresses this need by connecting physicians with academic colleagues. Using video conferencing, an educator hosts a session concentrating on a specific disease site and fellow physicians submit cases to be discussed in this collaborative environment. The first disease site targeted was breast cancer, but Chartrounds has since expanded to include multiple disease sites across many countries.

Chartrounds emphasizes the bidirectionality of knowledge transfer. It is not just the experts who direct the sessions, but also the participants who are encouraged to offer their own experiences and insights. Through analyses done in the past, it was found that there were substantial healthcare savings due to the efforts of Chartrounds. This number points to the impact of this partnership between community-based and academic physicians on the field of healthcare as a whole.
